I am using pentax k10d. Up to 200ISO it acts very pleasant but above 400 it is a disaster

... It actually have the very same sensor as D80 has

the Nikon D80 does fine even at ISO 800. So does the Canon Rebel.

I have not really tried it much above 800 -- but it will go to 3200

So, the pricier the camera, the higher the usable ISO

as I said the Nikon D80 and Pentax K10d has the same sensor... BUT the software that controls the camera is different so they have differences...
In general: The lower the ISO the higher the dynamic range it can capture and lower the level of noise. So... if you want to make clean photo you should use lower ISO..
